Does mediation take place online or in-person?

Traditional mediation typically involves face-to-face meetings between parties and a neutral mediator in a physical setting. However, with advancements in communication technology, virtual mediation has emerged as a viable alternative. Mediations at Easy Way Divorce typically take place virtually over Zoom, however mediations can also take place in-person at either of our BC offices (Kelowna or Vancouver).

While in-person mediation has its own benefits, we feel that virtual mediation over video-call is preferable for a number of reasons:

  • Virtual mediation eliminates geographical barriers, allowing parties to participate from anywhere with an internet connection. This accessibility is particularly beneficial for individuals residing in different locations or those with mobility constraints. It also means that if there is a lot of tension between mediating parties, there is no requirement to be physically in the same room as each other.
  • By eliminating the need for travel and physical presence, virtual mediation offers greater flexibility and convenience to all parties involved. Participants can schedule sessions at mutually convenient times, reducing disruptions to their daily routines.
  • Virtual mediation can be much more cost-effective compared to traditional mediation because it reduces expenses associated with travel, accommodation, and facility rental. This makes conflict resolution more affordable and accessible to a wider range of individuals and organizations.
  • Virtual mediation utilizes video conferencing tools, online collaboration platforms, and other digital solutions to facilitate communication and negotiation remotely. These platforms streamline the mediation process by providing tools for document sharing, electronic signatures, and real-time communication, enhancing efficiency and expediting the resolution of disputes, saving time (and therefore money!) for all parties involved.

While traditional, in-person mediation is still an option, many find that online mediation provides a more comfortable and practical solution for resolving conflicts.
